Hi

I was recently asked what exactly is mental sunshine and where did it come from?

It’s such a lovely phrase, isn't it?

Well, mental sunshine is all about being in a state of peace, poise and harmony.

It’s actually from one of the books I constantly read and refer to called Thinking for Results by Christian D Larson (author of the brilliant Optimists Creed - a poem that's also one of my daily reads).

It was originally published in 1911, and it’s still available from your local online bookstore. And, at only 128 pages, it’s a quick, easy read too.

Early on in the book, Larson states:

"… no mental growth can take place without mental sunshine. Accordingly, we should resolve to be happy no matter what may transpire. We cannot afford to be otherwise. Sunshine will melt the most massive iceberg if the rays are direct and the clouds are kept away; and it is the same in daily life. No matter how cold, disagreeable and uncongenial your present environment may be, plenty of mental sunshine can change it all."

When I read that phrase, it really stuck with me.

It sounds a bit too simplistic to say that you can just resolve to be happy, and that then your mental sunshine can “melt the most massive iceberg” - but on the other hand, I’ve found that it really does help to make that conscious effort to find (or create) some mental sunshine.

Of course, we all know - especially after the last year or so - that it can be hard to maintain our mental sunshine on a daily basis. When you’re busy dealing with daily life it’s not uncommon to find that your mental sunshine is somewhat lacking.

That’s why I started sending this weekly email - to provide you with a bit of mental sunshine to brighten up your day and something that you can share with others.

As Larson says:

"Make it a practice to go to sleep every night with cheerfulness on your mind and a feeling of joy in every atom of your being".

This will transfer to your subconscious and roll over into your following day

The keyword here is
practice.

Practice finding your mental sunshine each day by consciously thinking about being in a state of peace, poise and harmony. Over time it becomes easier and habitual.

My mental sunshine was in full flow, just like the River Tummel nr Pitlochry in Scotland
when I took this photo whilst out yesterday.

One thing that helps is our
A photo a day for wellness Facebook group where everyone is encouraged to post a single photo each day of something that gives them a burst of mental sunshine.

I find that the process of slowing down in the moment to take the photo helps me to be mindful and present - and posting it in the group provides connection with others.

As well as this, we get to see all the fantastic photos other members have posted.

Mental sunshine all round!!! Now that's got to be a Win Win...

Do you have a similar phrase that sums up positivity for you?

Next week is all about "compliments"

Keep smiling and have a happy week
