Hi

This week’s Mental Sunshine is something that has really helped me. Especially over the last 2 years with the Covid pandemic and now the disturbing events going on in Ukraine.

Stop watching, listening & reading the news...

I know, your first reaction to this might be “but I need to know what’s going on!” or "I need to keep myself informed".

And yes I agree, however, I've found that if it's important enough, will find out what going on anyway. But from a more neutral standpoint so you can form your own opinion.

Not following some kind of news agenda.

We live in a world of 24-hour news where sensational headlines are designed to draw you in and shock you.

The main news story never changes with each bulletin, from morning to night. The same thing over and over.

And the thing about the news is, they mainly tend to report the bad things.

Yes there are many things happening in the world that need to be reported.

But we don’t need to be reminded of it every hour, on the hour, everywhere we look.

It’s really easy to get caught watching endless news reports, which can cause a feeling of panic, overwhelm and sadness. Often by things that are well beyond our control.

When that happens we are of no use to anyone - by being overwhelmed we find that we are actually contributing to the negative feeling in the world, rather than trying to counter that with positivity and kindness.

Filter the news in a way that you can form your own opinion

One thing you can do to help is to donate to a charity or offer your practical support in whichever way suits you best.

There are many local organisations like Hertfood who are doing a wonderful job collecting food and aid for Ukraine.

So try to focus on this, rather than all of the never-ending reporting negativity.

If you don’t want to abstain from news completely, try to limit your intake to one bulletin per day - and don’t make that the first thing you see or hear in the morning or the last thing you see at night!

Try it for the next week and let me know how it goes...

Keep smiling and have a wonderful day...
